Foster Homes

One of our most important services is a network of foster homes. The public shelters in Coffee County, including Manchester and Tullahoma city shelters, do not take cats and the shelters receive more dogs than can be rehomed. Foster families are saving lives of these homeless pets every day, and more foster families are always needed. The purpose of fostering is to prepare the animal for adoption. A foster parent needs to have time to work with the animal to help make it an adoptable pet. Foster families receive assistance in this endeavor from the dog or cat coordinator and other members of the CCHS. The CCHS pays all medical costs for foster pets and can provide pet food upon request. It is helpful if the foster family can assist with transportation of the pet to adoptive events or medical appointments but it is not required.

Vetting

Ideally the Coffee County Humane Society tries to have a foster animal seen by a veterinarian before being placed with a foster family. Even so, it is often advisable to quarantine a new animal in the home from the resident animals for a few days, so having a suitable area for this is needed. Cats must be kept indoors and dogs must be confined either inside or in an outside fenced area or pen. Dog houses, crates, pet beds, puppy pads, etc. can be supplied to the foster family as needed.
